Step 1: Drain the Machine

Before moving forward with boxing up your Series 1, it's extremely important to remove all the water from the machine. This helps avoid damage due to spillage and/or the water freezing if the temperature is cold enough during transit.

Drain the tank/drip tray

Begin by removing the water tank from the unit and emptying it of all water. Then, place it back in the machine.

Then, remove the drip tray and pour any standing water out of it as well. Leave the drip try unattached for now.

Drain the boiler

Next, you'll need to make sure all the water is drained from the internal components.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You'll be draining water from the front of the machine where the drip tray sits. Please ensure something is underneath it to catch the water that's drained.

To make things easier, place something like a folded-up dish towel under the back feet of your Series 1.

Then, locate the purge valve screw on the left side of the drip tray area. Turn it counterclockwise one full rotation with a flat-head screwdriver. The screw is NOT designed to come all of the way out.

Once the screw is loosened, you'll notice the water begin to drain slowly. This is normal, and it will likely take between 5 and 8 minutes for all the water to drain.

Once the draining is complete, tighten the screw by turning it clockwise until it stops. Please do not over-tighten the screw. Then, use a towel to wipe up any leftover water.

Step 2: Pack the accessories

Place the accessories in their bags

Each of the accessories comes with its own plastic bag to prevent it from being scratched in transit. Place each in its corresponding (and similarly-sized) bag.

Place the accessories in the box

Once each accessory is in its bag, place them in their corresponding spots in the accessory box. We've included a picture of what it should look like for your reference below.

Close the box

Once all the accessories are in, it's time to close everything up! Close the tabs and lid in the following order:

  1. Fold the front flap edge inward
  2. Fold both side flaps inward
  3. Fold the top flap down
  4. Slide the lock tab on the front into the slot to secure the box

Step 3: Secure the drip tray

Next, place the drip tray back into the front of your Series 1. Place a piece of tape (masking tape works really well) on each side of the drip tray—long enough to reach the underside. This will hold the metallic grate in place during transit.

Step 4: Place the bag over the machine

Now, grab the large, soft bag and arrange it so the bottom seam runs from the front of the machine (the drip tray) to the back (where the cord is). Carefully place the bag over the top of the machine, and leave a little extra room in the front around the steam wand. This will help reposition it later be a little easier.

Please note: The power cord should not be covered by the bag. There's a spot for it to go later.

Step 5: Place the machine into the tray

Next, grab the cardboard bottom tray so that the handles are on the sides, the lower edge is facing you, and the higher edge is in the rear. Place your Series 1 on one side of it with the drip tray facing you, like in the image below.

Each of the circular openings in the cardboard tray will line up with one of your Series 1's feet. Lift the Series 1 on the sides in the middle using both hands, place it in the tray so that the feet line up, and make sure the power cord hangs over the back.

You'll notice a little notch in the back of the tray. Wrap the cord into a loop and place it there. There won't be a USB-C cable like in the example above, just the power cord.

Step 6: Place the machine/tray into the outer box

We're almost done! Continue by opening the outer box if it's not already, and arrange it so the short, wide flap is facing you. In the example below, Kinsey is behind the box. However, you should be looking at it exactly like it is in the video when standing in front of it.

Then, place the lower tray on the flap you just opened, with the drip tray/steam wand on your left side. Don't slide it into the out box yet.

Step 7: Attach the accessory box

One of the final steps is to attach the accessories box. Slide the accessories box onto the front of your Series 1, and slightly lift and then lower the steam wand so it fits into the matching slot. The accessories box should fit snugly under the grouphead.

Step 8: Attach the top tray

Then, attach the top tray onto the top of the machine. The longer side should fit around the back of it, opposite to the accessories box.

Step 9: Finish closing the outer box

Finally, slide the entire assembly you've been working on back into the outer box. Close up the box by doing the following:

  1. Fold the front flap up, making sure the side tabs fit into their corresponding slots in the sides of the box
  2. Fold the outer front flap down over the inner flap you just closed
  3. Ensure that the side flaps on top go on the inside of the box
  4. Slide the side flaps on the outer front flap into the corresponding slots on the side of the box
