While having your Aiden tell you to add water to the tank in error can be extremely frustrating, we’re confident that following the troubleshooting steps below can get it back to brewing properly!
If you'd like to learn more about the "add water" message, including things you can do to help prevent it, check out our companion article here!
Check the Showerhead
As a first step, remove the showerhead by turning the selector in the middle clockwise, like in the gifs below.
Once the showerhead is removed, take a look at the back. If you see scale buildup like in the picture below (it's a rather extreme case, so it will probably be less), it's a good indicator that the add water message appearing is related to scale buildup, and that it's time to descale your Aiden.
Please note that the descale is broken into three cycles, 16, 10, and 10 minutes respectively, and there's an empty/refill stage between each that must be completed within 5 minutes before moving forward. If you get the add water message when trying to descale, try letting the combined solution sit in the tank for about 5 minutes and try again. You may need to descale a few times before it gets rid of all the buildup.
Flush the water line
If the showerhead is clean, the next step is to flush your Aiden’s water lines by going to Settings >> Maintenance >> Flush from your Aiden’s main menu. This is a feature that was added in the recent 1.4.16 firmware update, so if you notice your Aiden isn’t on that version yet (you can check in Settings >> About >> Version), please connect it to the Fellow App using a stable internet connection. By leaving it connected for at least 24 hours, your Aiden should update to the most recent firmware version automatically. If you run into any issues with connecting, please refer to our help center article here.
Note the results
After the flush cycle finishes, it will display a “completed” or “failed” message, along with the ml/S rate recorded during the flush, as in the examples below.
If the screen shows a “Flush completed” message, the add water error was likely a result of something caught in the water line that has now been cleared. However, if you receive a “Flush failed” message, move forward with the troubleshooting step below that corresponds with the result you’re shown.
| Flush Result | Next Step |
|---|---|
| The flush fails, and ml/S is between 0.1 and 6.0 | Try descaling your Aiden using a liquid descaler (we offer both liquid and concentrate versions on our website). If your Aiden has a lot of buildup, you might get the add water message when you go to descale. If that happens, let the descaling solution sit for 5 minutes and try again. Even after that, it may take multiple tries to fully clear the scale buildup. |
