My Kettle Seems Louder! What's Going On?

What's Happening?

If your kettle has suddenly gotten louder while heating water (like in the example below), there's no need to worry! Normally, this is due to a phenomenon called cavitation. Cavitation is when water turns to steam against the hot bottom of the kettle, forming small bubbles. As these bubbles rise, they suddenly collapse, which ends up being rather noisy.

On top of this, it's worth noting that mineral buildup (limescale) is an insulator. Buildup can lead to cavitation, longer heat times, and, ultimately, louder boiling volumes.

What Can I Do About It?

The great thing is that the solution for this is a simple one: get rid of the limescale! Normally, descaling your kettle once or twice will remove the mineral buildup and lead to a quieter heating experience.

You can use vinegar or a descaling solution to descale your kettle. Both are safe and effective cleaning solutions; however, descaling solutions are a bit stronger and don't leave a lingering scent like vinegar may leave. We offer liquid and concentrate options on our website

Descaling instructions:

  • If you use vinegar, heat a solution of half vinegar and half water in your kettle. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it sit for at least a half-hour before dumping it out and rinsing the kettle thoroughly.
  • If you use a ready-made solution, follow the instructions for mixing on the packaging. Once the mixture is complete, bring the mixture to a boil and let it sit for at least a half-hour before dumping it out and rinsing the kettle thoroughly.

Note: Scrubbing the bottom of your kettle with steel wool or an abrasive brush will damage the inner surface of the kettle, ultimately leading to worse limescale and could also result in the development of rust. Please use a sponge or soft brush to clean the inside of your kettle.
