Getting Started

Backflush cleaning is a maintenance process for espresso machines where a cleaning detergent and backflush disc are used to flush out coffee oils and residue from the grouphead. It helps keep the internal components clean, preventing clogs and ensuring consistent espresso quality. Regular backflushing extends the life of the machine and maintains optimal performance. You'll need about 5 minutes to complete this, along with the following tools:

  1. Backflush disc
  2. Cleaning tablet or detergent

Step 1: Prepare Your Supplies

Get your supplies ready. You'll find the backflush disc stored under the mat on the top of the machine. The cleaning tablets can be found in your Series 1's accessories box.

Step 2: Insert the Backflush Disc

Insert the backflush disc into the portafilter with the tab facing upward (it's okay to use either the single-wall or double-wall basket), then put a single cleaning tablet in it.

Step 3: Insert the Portafilter

Insert the portafilter into the grouphead and lock it in place.

Step 4: Run the Backflush Cycle

Turn on your Series 1, go to Settings > Maintenance > Backflush cleaning, and start the process. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 5: Rinse Supplies

Once done, rinse off the portafilter and backflush disc. Place the backflush disc back in storage underneath the mat.
