Getting Started

The shower screen is a small metal filter under the group head that helps distribute water evenly over the coffee puck during extraction. Over time, coffee oils and fine grounds can build up and clog it, which can lead to channeling and undesirable flavors.

You'll need up to 10 minutes and the following tools:

  1. A short Phillips screwdriver
  2. Cafiza espresso machine cleaner (or similar product)
  3. An espresso machine cleaning brush, or cleaning cloth

Step 1: Power Off and Cool

Make sure your Series 1 is turned off and fully cooled before you start. The underside of a heated grouphead can cause burns if you accidentally touch it.

Step 2: Remove the Shower Screen

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the center screw holding the shower screen in place. A short screwdriver makes it much easier to work under the grouphead.

Step 3: Clean the Shower Screen

Depending on how much buildup there is, you can either wipe the shower screen clean or soak it first. For heavier buildup, soak the screen in a bowl of warm water and Cafiza (or a similar espresso machine detergent) for 10-15 minutes, then wipe and rinse thoroughly.

Step 4: Clean the Grouphead

Use a brush to scrub inside the grouphead and loosen any built-up residue. Then, wipe away any remaining grounds or oils.

Step 5: Reattach the Shower Screen

Reinstall the shower screen and tighten the screw until it's snug—no need to over-tighten!

Step 6: Run a Flush

Turn the Series 1 back on, then long-press the Brew button to run a flush and rinse out any remaining detergent from the grouphead.

Step 7: Reset the Reminder

Go to Settings > Maintenance > Shower screen and select "Reset reminder" to clear your 60-shot reminder.
