Inserting and Tightening Your Portafilter

Series 1 uses a commercial-style 58 mm grouphead, meaning there is no fixed “hard stop” when inserting the portafilter. Instead, the tightening point can shift over time as the group gasket naturally breaks in and slowly compresses with use.

The upside is longevity: as the gasket wears, you can rotate the portafilter a little farther to maintain a tight seal, which can help extend gasket life. The tradeoff is that there isn’t a single obvious stopping point, so it’s possible to overtighten, especially if you lock in a cold portafilter firmly and then find it’s harder to remove once everything is hot and expanded.

A few things to note:

  • Tighten the portafilter until it’s snug and sealed. There’s no need to aim for a specific clock position (like 90°).
  • Expect a short break-in period for the group gasket. During the first days to weeks (depending on use), the portafilter may feel tighter than usual when locking in.
  • If you leave the portafilter locked in while the machine heats up, it may be harder to remove when hot. If it feels stuck, don’t force it. Let the machine cool down, then remove it.

Using Third-Party Accessories

Series 1 uses a standard 58 mm group, so it’s broadly compatible with the wider ecosystem of espresso tools. That said, we don’t test third-party accessories, so we can’t guarantee fit or performance when you use them:

Portafilters

Many standard 58 mm portafilters will work with Series 1 as long as the neck clears the underside of the grouphead. Even when they fit, however, the “lock-in” feel and final stopping position may differ. Series 1’s included shot splitter is not compatible with third-party portafilters.

Baskets

Any 58 mm baskets will likely fit, but changing basket height or rim geometry can shift where the portafilter engages and seals. New baskets may also change flow rates and impact your existing profile shot times, so you may need to re-dial them.

Tampers

Any 58 mm tamper will likely work fine; our tampers are 58.3mm in diameter and matched to the included baskets for an optimal fit.
