General Tips
Before we get into specific cleaning steps, let's discuss some general guidance to keep in mind when cleaning your Ode.
- Safety first: Any time you're performing cleaning or maintenance on your Ode, unplug it from the wall. Most importantly, never place fingers in the exit chute, in the burr chamber, or near the burrs when Ode is plugged in.
- Stay away from water: To save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run (and to avoid voiding the warranty), never submerge any part of your Ode in water other than the catch cup/lid. This includes the burrs, even if they're fully removed from the grinder.
- No dishwashers: Any part or accessory that can be removed from the grinder should never be machine-washed.
- When in doubt, reach out: If you hear a strange noise or notice any new behaviors with your Ode while working with it, it's always best to stop and reach out to our Customer Experience team instead of trying to solve things yourself. They're always willing to help, and you can reach out here.
Exterior Cleaning
First, let's discuss how to clean the exterior of your Ode. We've broken it down by part below.
Ginder Exterior
To keep the outside of your Ode looking clean, wipe it down with a soft, damp cloth. For coffee stuck in those hard-to-reach spots, the included Ode Cleaning Brush can be a massive help!
Load Bin & Load Bin Lid
To remove coffee grounds and coffee oil buildup, wipe down the load bin and load bin lid with a soft, damp cloth. Oils can be pesky, so you might need to rewipe certain areas multiple times depending on the level of buildup.
Catch Cup & Catch Lid
To clean the catch cup and lid, wipe gently with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. Dry with a dry cloth or air dry after cleaning. Just make sure it's completely dry on the inside before you grind coffee the next time (you'll thank us later).
Interior Cleaning
Next, let's discuss how to clean the inside of your grinder!
Cleaning Tablets
If you're in a hurry or don't want to completely open your Ode up for a deep clean, grinder cleaning tablets like these are a great way to keep your Ode clean without the extra hassle.
To use cleaning tablets, make sure all beans are run through your grinder by running it for 10-20 seconds. Use the cleaning tablet instructions to place the appropriate amount into the grinder. Adjust the grind setting to 11 and press the power button to run the grinder. Grind all of the tablets into the catch. Once complete, we recommend grinding approximately 30 g of coffee to remove any tablet residue. Discard the ground tablets/coffee from the catch and clean.
Cleaning the Burr Chamber
The most surefire way to make sure your Ode is as clean as possible is to access the burr chamber and remove all the built-up coffee. We've included a video below that walks you through this process step-by-step and details what tools you'll need.
Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting the auger key to stay in place and lined up when you're putting your Ode back together, lean it on its "back" on the edge of a counter or table so the power chord isn't bent unnecessarily. You'd be surprised how much gravity can help hold things in place until you can screw the front dial back on!
Recalibrate your Burrs
While it's not mandatory, it's always a good idea to recalibrate your burrs each time you take your Ode apart and reassemble it. The video below walks you through this process and details the tools you'll need for the job.
Cleaning the Anti-Static Prongs
If you've noticed that your Ode Gen 2 (not Gen 1) has suddenly become messier, or you just want to ensure you're getting as little retention as possible, it's a good idea to give the anti-static prongs by the exit chute a good brushing. In the video below, our VP of R&D, Nick, walks you through how to do so.
How often do I clean?
You'll probably find that unless there's a jam or clog, it will seem like your Ode won't need to be cleaned very often. However, a clean grinder is a happy grinder! If the grinder is used daily, the burrs should be cleaned at least every three months, using tablets or by cleaning out the inside of the burr chamber with a stiff brush (refer to our cleaning video above for information on both).
If you don’t use your grinder daily or every other day, you can get away with pushing the deeper cleaning out a little bit further. However, we advise clearing old grinds that may remain in the chute before the next use. If any old coffee residue is sitting inside the grinder, it might affect the taste of your next brew. To clear the chute out, pre-grind a small amount first (7 g / 0.25 oz) and discard.
