What do I do if my Clyde Electric Kettle is leaking from around the power switch?

We completely understand that water near your kettle's power switch is alarming, but there's normally no need to worry. Continue reading to learn why this happens with our Clyde Electric Kettle, what to do if this happens to you, and how you can avoid it in the future!

Why it Happens

Unlike our Stagg and Corvo EKG kettles, which use a temperature sensor, Clyde uses a mechanical auto-shutoff. When the water boils, steam travels through a small internal tube to the switch and pushes it off.

If the kettle is filled close to the Maximum Fill line and tipped back toward the handle at a steep angle, water can run into the steam tube and drip out around the switch. This is a known behavior of this kind of shutoff, and it doesn't mean your kettle is defective.

What to Do if it Happens

If you find your Clyde Electric Kettle leaking from around the power switch, the resolution is as simple as making sure it's dry before the next use:

  1. Unplug the base and let the kettle cool completely.
  2. Wipe the kettle and base dry.
  3. Let it air-dry overnight before you plug it back in.

How to Avoid Leaking in the Future

Since this type of leaking is related to water getting into the steam tube mentioned before, preventing it in the future is as easy as following the three tips below:

  • Fill only to the Maximum Fill line, or a little below it.
  • Pour by tilting the kettle forward toward the spout, not back toward the handle.
  • Keep the kettle upright when you carry it or set it down, especially when it's full of hot water.
