Coffee sieves have been around for years but have really only begun to be used at home in the last 5 or so. The Shimmy is designed to help you reproduce your favorite coffee brewing recipe more accurately by removing coffee “fines”, smaller coffee particles that can clog your brew. A 200-micron etched filter removes these grounds that affect extraction the most. The design and motion couldn’t be easier, think “cocktail shaker”.
What is the average grind loss using the Shimmy Coffee Sieve?
The Shimmy is designed to remove grinds (smaller than 200-microns) that may “choke” or clog your brew, but don't just throw them out. Fines can be re-purposed in a variety of ways: baking, cooking, cleaning, or even gardening. Coffee grinds are also biodegradable so they can be composted.
A few observations about coffee sieving remain generally true:
- The finer the grind adjustment, the more potential for fines
- The longer you sieve (shake), the more fines you may collect
