The Fellow sifter is different from the mesh sifters I am used to. How do I achieve the best results?

Fellow’s sifter works a little differently than traditional mesh sifters, so here’s how to get the best results!

  • Place the sifter securely on top of your matcha bowl.
  • Weigh out about 2g (1–2 full scoops) of matcha powder with the included spoon and add it to the center of the sifter.
  • Hold the sifter steady with one hand. With the other, use the back of the spoon to gently sweep the matcha back and forth across the holes on the surface.
  • Think of it like polishing the surface rather than pressing down. Use light pressure and smooth, continuous motions that cover the full area of the holes.
  • As you move the matcha across the surface, you’ll see a fine, even dust fall into the bowl below.
  • If you notice powder collecting near the rim, bring it back toward the center and continue sweeping until everything has passed through.
  • For 1–2 scoops of matcha, the process should take about 30 seconds, just enough time for a smooth, clump-free sift. A gentle, consistent sweeping motion is more effective than pressing straight down. Using the full width of the perforated area helps the powder move evenly through the holes.
